Doubt the Legitimacy of Violent Impulses
Conflict management tip:
When things get heated during an argument, our impulse control can get drowned out by the need to feel right or understood. Physiologically, the nervous system jumps into the need to escape or defend itself from perceived threats.
When this happens, some may find violence to be the only solution. However, begin now doubting the legitimacy of violent impulses. Even a single breath can slow down the reaction time and allow the opportunity to find a more favorable solution that fosters compassion and understanding.
Allow your breath to soften the demand of the emotion and turn toward the internal evaluation any time you experience have a violent impulse when angry.
Hurting others
Throwing items
Hitting
Kicking
Punching
Pulling
Breathe.
Question these.
Be suspicious of the why.
And give yourself the freedom to choose compassion and understanding.
