MINDFULNESS MONDAY: Mmm Mmm Mmm Mmm

If you’re of a certain ‘vintage’ (I know I am!), you may recall a song called ‘Mmm Mmm Mmm Mmm’ by Crash Test Dummies. A big global hit in the 90’s, it’s mostly memorable for singer Brad Robert’s resonant humming of the song title.

How does this link with today’s blog? Well, it may sound a bit unusual and strange, but one helpful technique for lowering stress is called ‘vocal toning’

The benefits are a reduction of adrenaline and cortisol - while both have their place in daily life, and excesses of both cause heightened stress.

So - what does the technique involve?

  1. Sit up straight.

  2. Make a humming noise, an ‘mmm’ with your teeth slightly apart and lips closed.

  3. Have fun changing pitch and volume, mixing it up a little until you feel a pleasant tingling sensation in your face.

  4. Let this pleasant sensation travel to your heart and down to your stomach.

Yes, I know it sounds a bit weird, but it’s worth trying, perhaps? Find yourself a quiet spot when you are feeling overwhelmed and give it a go.

How does it work?  Scholarly articles have provided the explanation that sound vibration can positively affect many neurological disorders, mainly those issues related to anxiety. While music listening has a hugely positive impact, PRODUCING sound has an even more effective result in lessening stress.

Vocal Toning and music as a whole also has positive physical effects. Singing and humming acts on the cardiovascular system and the nervous system, positively influencing mood and well-being. it helps to turn off the outside noise but also the constant chatter inside the head.

Worth a go? Maybe. And probably better than screaming!
